For the second month in a row now Singapore Airlines has managed to report an increase in passenger load factor, and means that the pick-up of demand may well and truly be here to stay.
Singapore Airlines has been struggling with its load factors for some time now, over the past year it, and many other airlines, have been dealing with lacklustre demand in the market.
But even prior to that, Singapore Airlines had to deal with an abundance of capacity from the introduction of A380 services into its fleet. In fact, we have to go as far back as December 2007 to find a month which grew load factor, and even then it was only 0.3%.
These last two months then, with its sustained load factor growth must come as a sign of relief, with the 3.6% growth in load factors in October following the 4.0% growth in September.
Singapore Airlines does admit that this month’s growth comes “against the backdrop of a 10.3% reduction in capacity,” while “the number of passengers carried fell 9.6% over the same month last year to 1.4 million.”
In essence, the fall in demand was outweighed by the fall in available seats, and that it’s adjustments to its network are finally coming in line with the market.
