GOL Reactivate Boeing 767 Aircraft for Charter

GOL plans to reactivate two more Boeing 767s as the Brazilian carrier expands its new widebody charter operation to include flights to the US, Europe and South Africa.
The company stopped operating 767s in 2008 after dropping all long-haul services at its Varig division but at the end of last year reactivated one aircraft for charters to the Caribbean. ATI and Flightglobal reported last month the carrier was looking at re-activating additional 767s as part of a plan to expand its Caribbean charter operation, which was launched in July 2009 and now uses a mix of 767s and Boeing 737s.

TAT Technologies Lost Profits Aviation Industry Weakness

Aviation supplier and defense contractor TAT Technologies Ltd. said Monday it lost $1 million in the fourth quarter because of general weakness in the aviation industry.
The loss, which amounts to 12 cents per share, compares with a net income of $700,000, or 12 cents per share, a year earlier. TAT, based in Israel, said its revenue dropped 41 percent to $18.4 million.
For the full year, TAT reported net income of $1.8 million, or 22 cents per share, down from profit of $4.3 million, or 65 cents per share, in 2008. Its full-year revenue fell 20 percent to $83.1 million.

Turkish Airlines to Expand Passenger Capacity and Market Share in Hungary

Turkey’s national carrier, Turkish Airlines, or THY, is aiming to expand its passenger capacity and market share in the central European country of Hungary, where it says it has seen great interest in the airline.
The company plans to increase the number of passengers utilizing THY’s flight services in Hungary, said Levend Ar?soy, THY’s director-general in the country.
THY participated in the 33rd International Budapest Tourism Fair last week and drew a good response, Ar?soy said. [read more airlines news...]
Asia, Pacific Nations Vow To Fight Threats To Civil Aviation

Asia and Pacific nations vowed Saturday to fight emerging terror threats to commercial aircraft by boosting international security standards and measures, including screening technology.
The declaration was made in Tokyo at a one-day meeting attended by ministers and senior officials from 17 countries, plus Hong Kong and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
The Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Aviation Security was held in response to an aborted terror attack on Northwest Airlines Flight 253 approaching Detroit from Amsterdam on Christmas Day.
US Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano noted that the 289 people aboard the plane were from 18 countries including Australia, Japan, Canada, India, Pakistan and China.

Airline Buys Competitor’s Cheap Tickets so Passengers Could Not

Picture an airline that is having a super sale. When I say super, I mean SUPER. Selling tickets for only $0.19 USD (well it was for 1 Danish crown, but that equals about $0.19). Then picture a second airline whose employees go and buy out hundreds of the $0.19 tickets, not letting real passengers purchase them. Too crazy to happen? Think again.
Norwegian Air Shuttle, to celebrate a new route between Copenhagen and Karup, were offering the super cheap airfares. Danish airline Cimber Sterling employees saw a good opportunity to take advantage of the low fares.

American Airlines Won’t Be Cutting More Pilots April 1 After All

American Airlines Inc. told its pilots Friday that the carrier won’t have to furlough any pilots April 1 as feared.
With the carrier continuing to reduce capacity, American warned in January that it would need to furlough up to 175 pilots in 2010. It laid off 78 pilots on Feb. 28 and expected to send more out the door on April 1.
However, the plans have changed as the carrier re-evaluated how many pilots it would need compared with the number it had.

United Airlines Signs Firm Order for 25 Airbus A350 XWB Aircraft

United Airlines has made a firm order for 25 of Airbus’ A350 extra-wide bodied jets, fulfilling a commitment signed in December, the European aircraft manufacturer said Wednesday.
Deliveries of the 314-seat A350-900s are scheduled to begin in 2016 and run through 2019, Airbus said in a statement.
The order is half of a 50-aircraft order United announced in December, when it also unveiled plans to buy 25 of Airbus’ rival Boeing Co.’s 787 jets.

FAA Directs Airlines to Check Mechanism That Controls Tail Flap of Boeing 737s

The Federal Aviation Administration has issued an emergency airworthiness directive demanding that airlines check a mechanism that controls tail flaps on about 600 Boeing 737s.
The directive was issued Friday and concerns flaps on the horizontal tails of the jets. On March 2, a Ryanair 737-800 en route from the Netherlands to Madrid, Spain, experienced severe vibrations in flight and had to make an unscheduled landing in Belgium.
