Transport Workers Union to Support Business and Antitrust Agreement Between American Airlines and Japan Airlines

american airlines and japan airlines business agreementThe Transport Workers Union said Thursday that it supports American Airlines’s antitrust immunity application with Japan Airlines.

The union, which represents 28,000 workers at AA and American Eagle, sent a letter of support to the Transportation Department, which is considering American and JAL’s joint business agreement and antitrust application.

An approved application will allow the two carriers to jointly market and operate flights between the U.S. and Japan. American has received tentative approval for antitrust immunity with its Oneworld partners British Airways and Iberia.

“The proposed alliance between these two carriers is vital for Oneworld to compete effectively with the Star and SkyTeam alliances,” the letter said.

Japan Joins Asia And South Pacific Initiative To Reduce Emissions Program

Japan aviation industry yesterday joined US FAA, Airservices Australia and Airways New Zealand as a partner in the ASPIRE (Asia and South Pacific Initiative to Reduce Emissions) program.

ASPIRE flights use a host of optimized operational procedures and ATC routings, including tailored arrivals, to save time and fuel. “This is an important milestone in our collective effort to lessen aviation’s environmental footprint,” said FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt, who signed the agreement along with Japanese Civil Aviation Bureau DG Ryuhei Maeda.

Japan Airlines Reportedly Will Seek Debt Forgiveness, Slash 2,200 More Jobs

Japan Airlines is not commenting on reports in the Japanese media that it will seek ¥250 billion ($2.78 billion) in debt forgiveness from its creditors and increase its planned job cuts to 9,000.

The country’s new Democratic Party of Japan-led government, which took office last month, has expressed misgivings about JAL’s restructuring plan, which calls for cutting 14% of its workforce, or nearly 6,800 jobs, over the next three years while eliminating 50 routes, with a heavy emphasis on international reductions. Japan Airlines Corp (JAL) said on Friday it suffered a US $1 billion loss in the April-June quarter which is larger than its loss for the entire last year. The carrier’s revenues took a heavy hit under the double whammy of the economic downturn and the outbreak of swine flue resulting in a net loss of ¥99.04 billion in the three months ended 30 June.
