Kenya Airways Reported Airline Passenger Volume and Cargo Traffice Increase in First Quarter, 2011

Reuters online news reported, Kenya Airways recorded a 13.5 percent rise in passenger volumes in the first quarter of 2011 buoyed by new African routes and an increase in flight frequencies on popular domestic routes.
The airline, which is 26 percent owned by France-KLM, said passenger numbers rose to 791,302 in the three months, its fiscal fourth quarter.
Apart from increasing frequencies to its existing destinations, Kenya Airways started flights to Rome, Muscat, Juba, Luanda, Nampula and Malindi in the course of last year.
The amount of cargo carried during the period was up 5.2 percent at 14,326 tonnes, thanks to its focus on high dense cargo and a recovery in the perishable goods sector.
The airline’s chief executive told Reuters last year it aimed to carry 3 million passengers and 60,000 tonnes of cargo in the year to end-March.

Kenya Airways Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Titus Naikuni announced plans to buy the Embraer E190 aircraft before year end. The agreement marks a plane of two model agreements to deliver greater E190 Embraer jet, the first of which is expected to be delivered end of the year. Dr Naikuni said that the plane will be chartered from Jetscape, an Embraer aircraft leasing companies. The Embraer E190 will offer high comfort that is expected to come to the E170’s. Read more
